At fourteen years old, Sam Johnson has a fairly peaceful way of life; he has the company of life-long friends and lives in a pleasant house on the outskirts of Nottingham. He even finds school hassle-free, usually. In fact, there is only one thing that spoils Sam’s life; for the last five months his father has been working in South Africa and Sam misses him, a lot. Thankfully with Christmas in a few weeks, Steve Johnson is due to come home for the holidays. But an unkind twist of fate changes Sam’s life, literally overnight. He has to leave his comfortable surroundings and friends behind, and move to a quiet country village, to stay with an aunt he hardly knows, and an uncle he has never met before. Within a very short time Sam discovers life in the picturesque village hides a darker side and his uncle has a secret. Over the next few weeks Sam makes both enemies and friends, and he discovers childhood fantasies can turn into reality.

John Holmes, BBC Radio Nottingham - this book would work well on the big screen.

I bought this book for my daughter but I decided to read it too..Living in Nottingham, this book captured my interest. I could easily identify with the places I see on a daily basis. The characters are likeable and appealing and I look forward to the next instalment as it seems there is so much more to say . Elves, magic,caves,fantasy...it has all the right ingredients !A great start and a good recipe for future success.

I bought this book as an impulse buy. I had no idea what it was about. Upon starting the book, I realised it was a young adult book - but enjoyed it immensely. Not quite in the Philip Pullman league - YET! But as a first book by Karen Wright, it offers amazing potential. The book unfolds beautifully, with well rounded characters and kept my daughter and I enchanted throughout. It's difficult to say anymore without giving too much away. I'm just looking forward to the sequels!!!
